A message from Ms. Maya:

“Humans of OYIS” was the first unit for grade 7-8 English Language Acquisition Phase 4 & 5 students. It was inspired by the “Humans of New York” series. “Humans of New York” began as a photography project in 2010, which soon turned into stories about the people photographed. HoNY now has over twenty million followers on social media, and provides a worldwide audience with daily glimpses into the lives of strangers on the streets of New York City.

Our Statement of Inquiry (SOI) was: Sharing personal stories helps make connections, build relationships, and develop empathy amongst communities.

We learnt how to ask deeper questions, paraphrase stories, and write personal narratives that would build empathy. For our summative assessment, we chose to interview the OYIS staff and share their stories. We hope to provide a glimpse into the lives of the Humans of OYIS as a way to build deeper connections with the OYIS community.
