Spotlight on School Gardening: An In-Depth Survey of a Gardener and His Garden.

The Marvelous Mr White

I want to make us a greener and better school
— Mr White - Kindergarten Teacher

By Mel, Audrey L, Rento and Tiger

Have you ever wondered about the garden in the playground at YMCA and what they grow in it? In this article we will talk about some of the most common questions and the answers which were answered by the great gardener himself, Mr. White!

Our first question we had was a question about the types of plants he and his students grew. If you ever saw the EC garden, you will know that there are several different plants. He informed us that some of the plants he grows are onions, spinach, sunflowers, garlic and other interesting things. My personal favorite was potatoes since they looked really nice and pure.

Another question we had was how he grows his plants. How does he take care of them so well? He told us that it isn’t just him caring for the plants. His students also participate in growing them and there is also a club that cares for the plants too. He also makes compost to make the soil richer and also keeps certain needs in mind which keeps his plants nice and healthy.

The third question is why do you grow plants? Mr White said that the reason he grows plants is that he loved plants from when he was little. He thinks it is important to make the environment greener and eco-friendly. He also wants to teach recycling to the kids. Furthermore, he wants us to make a greener and better school!

Okay, so we’ve answered the questions related to the garden, but weren’t there more plants in our school? The answer is yes, there are fruit trees and one grape vine in our school like pomegranate and loquats! They were there ever since we were really little (like 5 years ago) and sadly, he didn’t know about its history and how it came here. However, Mr. White told us that if we look around the trees and spot a sapling from the tree, we can take it home and grow our own tree. This makes us predict that someone may have put the seed or sapling there for the greenery of the school.

We hope this has succeeded in helping you learn even more about our school’s greenery and nature.
