PYP News Club: OYIS's Budding Reporters

The PYP program of OYIS has been conducting a News Club during this first semester, organized by Mr. Morris Mandarino. He says "the News Club is a relatively new idea that encompasses a variety of different elements."

"Thus far, students have attempted to interview teachers, school leaders, staff and students to determine some of the following:

"- New developments in the school
- What and why students are doing the after school club they have chosen
- Future plans for the school
- Funny stuff that kids say"

"The first News club announcement/news reel," says Mr. Mandarino, "was a beta test for us." He continues, "We hope to receive feedback from staff and students in order to improve for next time. We also hope to be able to publish the second broadcast so it can be viewed by parents and the wider community."

So, what do the PYP students like about this club? I asked a few of them for their thoughts, and here's what they had to say:

Coy Baier Barga says, "I like that you can interview people, and you can work the camera, which is fun. I learned that being a news reporter is cool. I'm going to do news club again!" I'm sure the teachers and his fellow classmates are glad about his enthusiasm.

Mira Bacchilega also said, “It’s fun, [and] nice interviewing people, ... because we go around the school and ask people and teachers and clubs and the school. We asked a pre-schooler which was his favorite parent of teacher and he said 'yes.'”

It looks like PYP has some fun and underrated activities: if only I was a child again..!
