Grade 10 English Language & Literature: Intertextuality creative tasks

Inside Out: a screenplay

In Grade 10 English Language & Literature, students studied intertextuality, the complex interconnections between different creators’ works. Hitomi was interested in the pairing of different individuals in cinematic narratives, specifically the “two guys, one girl” friendship she’d seen developed in films like the Harry Potter series. For her creative task, she wrote this screenplay about such a group, choosing to alter characters’ sexual orientation to play with audience’s expectations around tension building in relationship dramas.

“The Garden”: graphic novel

Marshal was interested in the motif of the parentless child, common in manga and anime. She created a graphic novel based around a motherless child, weighed down by memories of her mother, who discovers her spirit in an unexpected place.

Aliha became interested in the common motif of the rose after we read V for Vendetta at the beginning of the year. She explored several texts that build the rose into their narratives as a symbol, focusing on the way roses can represent love, beauty or passion—but also death, danger and even evil.
