Why does Lawson have MUJI products now?

Do you have a preferred convenience store? Well, if you are a fan of Japanese retail company MUJI, famous for their minimalism no-brand brand household goods, Lawson might become your new favorite.

Earlier this year in May, Lawson Inc. and MUJI brand operator Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. announced that by 2023, MUJI goods would be available for purchase in 14,000 Lawson stores across Japan. First being experimented in the Kanto and Koshinetsu regions, the collaboration quickly achieved success and spread to other prefectures. Now, the product line in each revamped Lawson consists of around 200 of MUJI’s essential daily items. These are based on store location and customer demand, though common ones include stationery, cosmetics, drinks and snacks, and clothes.

The collaboration derives from the similar philosophy of the two companies: Ryohin Keikaku focuses on affordable, quality products to “realize a simple, pleasant life and society,” and Lawson services local communities to create “happiness and harmony in [our] communities." Response to the collaboration so far has been positive, and going forward, both companies have expressed excitement to develop new products and services as new ventures.

Next time you go to the Tosabori Lawson to buy lunch, check out the MUJI shelf on the left-hand side right before the cashier. What’s your favorite MUJI snack? I definitely know mine.
