OYIS’s Got Talent!

“Welcome to the first ever OYIS talent show!”

Last year, students in OYIS had a blast watching incredible performances including violin-playing, singing, rapping, and dancing at the MYP talent show hosted by Karin in 10th grade as her personal project. Because the previous talent show was such a beloved event at OYIS, I thought it must happen again this year without fail. Of course, as we’ve all anticipated, Karin announced the 2022 OYIS Talent Show with great excitement a while ago. The date has been set to the day before the beginning of Golden Week—April 28th, Thursday, which is perfect to send the students to break with joyful memories.

Initially, The 2022 OYIS Talent Show date was set to be on Pink Shirt Day which is on February the 25th. However, due to high COVID cases, the show was postponed until the end of April. Many students were frustrated at the news, but it also gave the opportunity for participants to prepare even harder! So I’m especially thrilled about this year’s talent show and I can’t wait to see what performances the participants have been preparing.

Karin, who’s now become a first year DP student, has begun organizing for the show as one of her CAS experiences, which aims to create a meaningful and inspiring experience for everyone. She’s been putting a lot of effort into organizing this year’s talent show despite the challenges due to COVID and she deserves the credits for enriching our school life!

I asked Karen about this year’s Talent Show and her personal goal through the event.

1. You managed to organize an amazing talent show last year! What motivated you to organize it again this year?

Karin: Last year's talent show went better than I expected, and many students and teachers told me that they wanted to do it again, so I decided to do it this year as well! Also, my goal is to make a talent show in one of the cultures of OYIS.

2.Were there any difficulties in organizing the talent show this year?

Karin: The most difficult part of organizing the talent show was choosing performances. There were many signups for the talent show and that was more than I expected. However, due to the time constraints, I had to narrow down to 8 performances, and that was the hardest decision.

3. What kind of performances have the participants prepared this year?

Karin: This year, we have bands, DJ, rap, singing, fashion show, and of course the K-pop dance!

4. What is one talent you wish to have?

Karin: Hmmm… There are many good singers in my class and I'm always jealous of them, so if I could gain new skill, I would choose singing.

5.What do you hope that participants gain from this experience?

Karin: My biggest hope is for every participant to gain self confidence.

As Karen says, I sincerely hope that the Talent Show boosts self-esteem and confidence. I also hope that everyone is excited to watch the show and get engaged during the performances. I cannot wait! Well, I will see you at the show very soon. Enjoy!
