2023 Oscars Recap: ‘Everything Everywhere’ Sweep!

The annual Academy Awards were held this past Sunday on March 12, and as usual, the lineup of films—and the cast and crew behind them—was amazing.

This year, A24 film Everything Everywhere All at Once was awarded the most, winning seven out of its eleven nominations. Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front followed close behind, with four wins out of its nine nominations.

Recap: Winners & Nominees

Best Picture

Winner: Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Other nominees: The Banshees of Inisherin; The Fabelmans; Avatar: The Way of Water; Tár; Top Gun: Maverick; Women Talking; Triangle of Sadness; All Quiet on the Western Front; Elvis.

On a personal note, I highly recommend Everything Everywhere All at Once if you haven’t yet watched it. It’s a little slow to start, and it gets… quite weird—but the emotional payoff at the end is, in my opinion, more than worth the wait.

Best Actor

Winner: Brendan Fraser (The Whale).

Other nominees: Bill Nighy (Living); Austin Butler (Elvis); Colin Farell (The Banshees of Inisherin); Paul Mescal (Aftersun).

Best Actress

Winner: Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

Other nominees: Cate Blanchett (Tár); Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie); Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans); Ana de Armas (Blonde).

I loved Yeoh’s acceptance speech for this award, particularly when she said, “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight … this is proof that dreams … do come true.” Yeoh is the first Asian woman to take home an award for Best Actress, making this win that much more exciting and, as she put it, “a beacon of hope.”

Best Supporting Actor

Winner: Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

Other nominees: Judd Hirsch (The Fabelmans); Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin); Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway); Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin).

Everything Everywhere All at Once has been seen as Ke Huy Quan’s comeback role, as his acting career met roadblocks after huge successes The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I found it very sweet that the first person he mentioned in his tearful acceptance speech was his mother: “My mom is 84 years old. And she’s at home watching. Mom… I just won an Oscar!”

Winner: Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

Other nominees: Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once); Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever); Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin); Hong Chau (The Whale).
