Grade 9 Field Trip to Mt. Rokkō
Summary of events:
On the morning on March 23rd 2022, grade 9 of OYIS departed from the Tosabori campus, setting off for a park on Mount Rokkō (六甲山). It created an oppoortunity for the grade to unite and participate in many activities as a group durning the field trip, which lasted throughout Monday.
Timeline of events:
The students arrived to attend the scheduled event, “Forest Adventure Kobe Rokkosan”: an activity developed in recent years that take full advantage of the natural environments of Rokkosan. “You can enjoy ‘walking in the air’ while experiencing various activities such as athletics and zip slides boasting a length of about 220 m by climbing with fall prevention safety equipment on the scaffolding installed at a position 2 to 15 m above the ground.” (Geraadpleegd 27 April 2022)
This activity took the grade about two hours to complete. While still having remaining time before leaving, grade 9 was then allocated time to spend on other available activities, such as boating, trampoline, and most importantly, dining on site before heading back to the campus. After arriving at Tosabori campus forty minutes before the day concluded, Coach Mack, an instructor of the PE department, split the class into two groups and organised a team activity, teaching the importance of teamwork.
Attendee feedback on the event:
There are many positive responses from students of grade 9. Here are some quotes extracted from live interviews.
Question - Do you have any thoughts on the field trip grade 9 took part in?
“I think it is a great opportunity for us to experience new things.” - Sang Hui (Grade 9)
Question - Do you find this field trip to be enjoyable?
“Yeah, I think it’s fun.” - Jake (Grade 9)
Question - If you can change this field trip in any way, how will you change it?
“I think it is how it is, but it would be great if there are more events like this in the future.” - Leo (Grade 9)
Question - Do you think you have built your character in any way throughout this field trip?
“Not sure, but I think it is an interesting new experience for me.” - Tommy (Grade 9)
My (Samuel, Grade 9) views on this event:
I personally think of this event as a success, because this field trip has set the platform for educators to show prime examples of the IB learner profile though real-life events. In addition, by assigning groups, students get the opportunity to encourage, interact, and communicate with people with whom they’ve had little to no interactions in the past.
Staff performance and satisfaction:
The staff member(s) at the venue had been helpful throughout, fulfilling the promised experience at Rokkosan, by explaining the functionalities of given equipment, and providing helpful commentary. But I, on my own behalf, believe that the explanation took a lot longer than necessary, as I have been to similar events in Australia (where I lived previously).
