Soccer and Basketball: Cancelled!
On Saturday, November 28, an OYIS soccer game with KIUA was cancelled. The MS girls soccer team has had a game against this soccer team before, but our second game was cancelled due to the rate of COVID-19 rising in Japan. "I guess it was good that the game was cancelled, so my arm could heal better, but I still wish I could have [...] played. Oh well! We will get them next time," Kiely Pecora, a G7 student who recently recovered from a broken arm, said about the cancelled game. She added, "I think that we are in tough times, and yeah, we might not be able to do everything we want to like go on vacations, walk around freely without wearing a mask; but the more we follow these rules, the faster COVID will go away, so I say, who cares if we wear masks all day? Let's show COVID who's boss!" about our community's response to the pandemic.
The MS basketball team also had a game cancelled on November 28. "I feel quite disappointed that we weren't able to play in the games and have a chance to actually beat KUIS," Lio Baba, a grade 7 student at OYIS stated. Mr. Jamie Riddalls, the MS basketball coach, confirmed, "The team was disappointed, but it is good that everybody is safe."
Not only did the MS basketball team sacrifice their game to COVID, but the high school basketball team's game on the same day was cancelled as well. The players have not had many games this term. All of the players, basketball and soccer, have had to turn in their jerseys, because there will be no more matches this calendar year. This may be disappointing, but at least we will be able to stay safe from COVID-19.
